I was having a text conversation with my North Carolina friend and fellow mandolin player Don Batten today while having a late lunch of hoppin’ John and pickled green tomatoes. Don had texted me to say that he heard that Jimmy Capps had passed away. After a few exchanges back and forth about work, lack of work and such, Don said that he had been lucky to keep working since COVID19 made itself at home here. He mentioned that he was getting arthritis in his fingers from beating them up with a hammer all these years. I told him that I was getting osteo arthritis in my two index fingers and my right big toe. I told him that I can understand the fingers because of all the mandolin playing they’ve been exposed to but I can’t figure out the big toe. Don said, “It’s from keeping time”.
